What is Anti-Slavery Day?
Anti-Slavery Day, observed annually on 18 October, is a day to raise awareness of modern slavery, human trafficking, and exploitation, and to encourage action to eradicate these crimes. First introduced through a UK Act of Parliament in 2010, the day reminds businesses, governments, civil society, and individuals of the ongoing work required to protect vulnerable people.
According to the Global Slavery Index, there are now an estimated 50 million people living in conditions of modern slavery, an increase of 10 million since 2018. Global challenges such as conflict, climate change, economic instability, and authoritarian regimes have increased vulnerability, making this issue more urgent than ever.
Anti-Slavery Day forms part of Anti-Slavery Week, which in 2025 runs from 13 – 19 October, highlighting the crucial role that awareness, education, and action play in tackling exploitation.
